September has a rhythm all its own. School routines are settling in, the mornings feel a little cooler, and calendars are filling up with school pictures, fall sports, homecoming, and everything in between. It’s a season full of moments worth remembering, and if you’re a teen (or the parent of one) navigating braces or Invisalign, it’s also a season with a few extra questions.
Smile Tips for Picture Day
Whether it’s the official school portrait or a candid at the homecoming photo booth, a few small habits go a long way toward feeling camera-ready.
- Brush right before you go. A quick brush and floss removes food from around brackets and keeps things looking clean. If braces aren’t part of the picture, a rinse and swipe of lip balm still does wonders.
- Practice a natural smile in the mirror. A forced grin can feel stiff. Try smiling like you would when you see a friend across the hallway — that’s the smile people love in a photo.
- Think of something genuinely funny. It sounds simple, but real smiles photograph better than posed ones — every single time.
- Bring lip balm and stay hydrated. Fall air is drier than summer air, and dry lips can catch on brackets. A quick swipe of balm and a few sips of water keep everything comfortable.
- Think about posture and head angle. A slightly lifted chin, shoulders relaxed, and a soft breath before the photo make a bigger difference than most people expect. Confident posture reads as a confident smile.
- Relax the lips before the shutter clicks. Tight, pressed lips create a stiff smile. A quick tip: press the tongue lightly against the roof of the mouth — it naturally softens the smile and evens out the jawline in photos.
- Remember the bigger picture. Braces in a homecoming photo aren’t something to hide from. Years from now, they’ll be part of the memory of this exact year — the outfit, the friends, the whole moment.
Choose Band Colors That Feel Like You
- School colors for spirit week, homecoming, or a big game
- Fall tones like burgundy, deep orange, forest green, or navy
- Neutral clear or silver for teens who prefer a more subtle look in photos
- Matching colors for your Homecoming dress or tie can be very complementary
- Navy, deep purple, or dark teal — these darker shades create contrast that makes teeth look brighter in photos.
- Silver or light gray — subtle and nearly disappears against the brackets in a portrait.
- Rich jewel tones (emerald green, sapphire blue) — great for homecoming photos and coordinating with dresses, suits, or school colors.
Homecoming Night with Invisalign
Invisalign aligners give patients a lot of flexibility, but big events do call for a quick game plan. A little prep makes the night feel easy.
- Aligners can come out for dinner and photos, then go right back in. Most patients keep them out for meals anyway, so this isn’t a big change — just something worth thinking about ahead of time.
- Bring the aligner case. It’s just as essential as a phone charger or a pack of gum. Never wrap aligners in a napkin — they blend right in and get thrown away far too often.
- Water is your friend. Water is safe to drink with aligners in, but sodas, punch, and anything sugary or acidic should wait until aligners are out. Then, rinse or brush before putting the aligners back in.
- Aim to get back to 20 to 22 hours of wear the next day. One evening of adjusted timing is fine, as long as it doesn’t turn into a pattern.
A Note for Parents
If your teen is feeling self-conscious heading into fall events, know that this is completely normal — and completely temporary. Sometimes the most helpful thing isn’t advice; it’s a reminder that they look great, that treatment is a season of their life and not the whole story, and that the confidence they’re building now will last long after the braces come off.
